SEO for trades. Build or recovery after an agency that destroyed the rankings.
Your competitor shows up for „Electrician Munich", you don't. Sometimes that is a build problem, sometimes the legacy of an agency that set no redirects after a migration and broke the GDPR configuration. Both are solvable, both scenarios are documented here. Fixed price instead of hourly model, clear scope instead of monthly PDF reports.
Diagnosis
Why many trades-business websites fail at Google.
More than one million trades businesses are registered in Germany (ZDH, key figures of the trades, end of 2024). The vast majority has a website. Few are built as a load-bearing inquiry channel. That rarely is due to the offering, almost always due to the structure. Five patterns we regularly see in audits.
The recurring picture: the website was set up once, with a site builder, an all-round agency or a web designer without SEO depth. Homepage with the company name, header image, phone number. Service pages exist formally, but are so generally formulated that Google cannot classify which search queries they are relevant for. The Google Business Profile was created, then not touched again for two years.
The result is always the same: the business is online but invisible for the search queries where customers actually want to commission. The first inquiry does not go to the best business in the city, it goes to the one that is found cleanly first.
What makes local trades search special: it is action-oriented. Anyone typing „electrician near me" or „Wallbox Munich" usually wants to commission within the next few days. The gap between „indexed" and „in the top 5" is the difference between inquiry and silence.
- No page-specific keyword signals. Every service page carries the same meta title, the same meta description or none at all. Google cannot classify the pages for specific search queries.
- Google Business Profile neglected. Incomplete categories, no current photos, no reaction to reviews. The most easily fixed local lever, and usually the most unused.
- Service pages without substance. Three sentences under „electrical installation" do not rank. Google evaluates content depth as a relevance signal, especially for money queries with competition.
- Mobile usability only on paper. Responsive does not mean mobile-optimised. CTAs, inquiry forms and load times are often desktop-aligned. Local trades searches, however, come from the smartphone in over 70 percent of cases.
- No clear next step. Visitors see the offering but find no guided path to inquiry. Often inquiries do not happen because of lack of interest, but because the page does not lead the visitor.
Three phases, one client
Build, damage, recovery: what actually happened.
Most case studies tell the success half. Here stands the entire chain: from the first private build to the damage of a predecessor agency to the recovery by seosath. Three phases, three different actors, same domain.
-
01 Build Private, before founding seosath
Patrick builds the first version as a personal favour.
Clean technical setup, topic-specific service pages for the core areas: electrical installation, Wallbox, electrical panel. Keyword research for local Munich search queries, Google Business Profile fully configured, mobile usability tested.
Result after a few months: position avg. 1.8 for „Zählerschrank Sanierung München", top-5 for several other local queries. First qualified inquiries via Google.
-
02 Damage Predecessor agency, intermediate phase
Predecessor agency ignores GDPR basics. „That is not part of the contract."
During ongoing operations, basic GDPR deficits on the website come to Rucker's attention: cookie consent not functionally configured, third-party scripts loaded without consent, legal texts not up to date. Rucker raises this with the agency. The answer: „That is not part of the contract." The deficits stay open. The risk is borne by the trades business, not the agency.
What is important at this point: a trades business cannot reasonably be expected to seamlessly check cookie-consent configurations, third-party data flows or tracking legal bases on its own. That is exactly why an agency is hired. These deficits could have ended in legal warnings, fortunately the damage was uncovered in time and remediated with the takeover by seosath.
Parallel to that, the second damage happens on the SEO side: a migration runs without redirect map. Old URLs point into the void, new paths do not index cleanly, top rankings dissolve. „Zählerschrank Sanierung München" falls out of the index. Rucker notices first by phone, the calls stop coming.
That such deficits get dismissed in an agency relationship as „not part of the contract" was one of the triggers for founding seosath: engagements where compliance, technology and SEO are managed as one unit, not as separable contract positions.

03 Recovery seosath, from February 2026
seosath takes over. Remediation in the right order.
First the technical hygiene: redirect map caught up, indexation status checked per URL, crawl errors worked off. In parallel: complete GDPR refit with consent configuration, third-party audit and clean legal texts. Then content structure rebuilt, Google Business Profile reconfigured, blog structured by local search intent.
Additional proof of implementation quality: a new article on Wallbox subsidies for multi-family buildings was indexed within 24 hours, with four times the daily-average click count on indexation day.
Position after recovery (GSC, March 2026)
- 3.6
Elektriker in der Nähe
Geo-dependent query, top-5 in Munich and surrounding area. - 4.2
Baustrom aufstellen München
Own service page with local orientation, newly structured. - 5.0
Wallbox Förderung München
Blog article, over 900 impressions per month after recovery. - 5.6
Wallbox Förderung Mehrfamilienhaus
Germany-wide content lever, news-driven indexed within 24 hours.
One query stays open: „Zählerschrank Sanierung München" still hangs in the damage caused by the predecessor agency and could not yet be fully restored. We are actively working on it. What was structurally torn down over weeks does not come back in a week: Google trust on a URL collapses fast under crawl errors, missing redirect signals and broken GDPR configurations, the rebuild takes months. Honest framing: recovery does not mean every loss automatically comes back at the same speed.
What has to rank per trade
Six trades, six SERP profiles.
„Trades" is not one industry, those are six to eight independent search worlds. Money queries, top positions and SERP features differ per trade so strongly that a generic strategy burns money. Here the most important levers per trade, from current audits and engagements.
-
01 · Electrical
Electrical installation & energy
Wallbox · PV system · electrical panel · E-Check · smart home · construction power
Subsidy topics (Wallbox subsidies, KfW grant) bring seasonal traffic. District clusters („Wallbox Munich Bogenhausen") beat the city query. Local schema with service listing required.
-
02 · Plumbing & heating
HVAC
Heat pump · condensing technology · bathroom renovation · emergency service · drinking-water hygiene
„Emergency service" and „heat pump subsidy" are the two money clusters. Emergency searches are 24/7 mobile, subsidy searches are desktop and comparative. Both need different page architecture.
-
03 · Painters & decorators
Painting & varnishing business
Facade painting · interior painting · varnishing work · mould remediation · ETICS
Image SERP („facade colour examples") carries considerable traffic. Image optimisation with alt text, image sitemap and WebP delivery is no bonus here, but mandatory. Reference galleries as own pages.
-
04 · Roofing
Roofing & cladding
Roof renovation · on-roof photovoltaics · storm damage · flat roof · roof window
„Storm damage" is event-driven (spike after storms), requires reactive content. On-roof PV is a cross-selling lever with electrical businesses. Service area usually county-wide, not district-precise.
-
05 · Windows & doors
Window installation & security
Window replacement · energy-efficient renovation · burglary protection · BAFA subsidy · sound insulation
Subsidy research is the first step of many buyers. Whoever ranks for „BAFA subsidy windows" wins the inquiry later. Comparison pages and configurator functionality as conversion lever.
-
06 · Other trades
Carpentry · interior design · flooring
Furniture making · parquet · vinyl · underfloor heating · floor renovation
Image SERP and visual platforms (Pinterest, Houzz indexation) carry more than for the other trades. Own reference domain with gallery beats platform profiles.
Per trade, the strategy call examines which of these clusters are commercially viable for your business in your catchment area, which are already saturated and where the fastest lever sits. No blanket recommendation, no best-practice list without context.
How seosath works
Four principles before the first click.
SEO for trades businesses is not a product you buy once and then it runs. It is structured work with clear phases, fixed price instead of an open hourly model, direct contact instead of a key-account layer. Four principles that every step in every engagement upholds.
01 · Structured diagnosis before any recommendation
Before we propose an action, we look at the status quo: which pages exist, how Google classifies them, where the largest lever sits, where compliance stands. The strategy call delivers this assessment as a written, prioritised action list, not as a sales demo.
02 · Fixed price per phase
Every project phase has a defined scope and a fixed price. No open hourly model, no runaway project costs, no surprise at month-end. You know before the start what is included and what is not.
03 · No reporting theatre
No monthly PDF reports that no one reads. No optimisations whose effect is not measurable. Actions are prioritised by expected effect, not by hour volume. The status is communicated in plain language, in the rhythm that makes sense for the engagement.
04 · Direct contact
No key-account manager between you and the actual work. Communication directly with us, for strategy, technology and SEO as well as for brand and visuals. The same pair of hands that plans the engagement also implements it.
Four steps per engagement, in which these principles become concrete. Every phase has a documented result and a written approval before the next phase starts.
-
Step 01
Analysis and prioritisation
Technical status quo, page structure, local keyword situation, status of the Google Business Profile. Result: written action list with sequence and effort estimate.
-
Step 02
Structure and keyword logic
Site architecture, keyword mapping, revision or rebuild of the service pages, Google Business Profile optimisation.
-
Step 03
Technical and content implementation
Title tags, meta descriptions, internal linking, content with sufficient depth, mobile usability. Launch with redirect map and indexation check.
-
Step 04
Handover and next phase
Documentation of the implemented actions, recommendations for ongoing self-maintenance, optional follow-up phase with defined scope.
Scope and boundaries
What is included in an SEO project for trades, and for whom it fits.
The exact scope is defined in the strategy call based on the concrete starting point. Typical components and the honest boundaries of when it does not fit.
Typically included: title tags, meta descriptions and H1 structure per page. Indexation and crawlability check. Mobile usability and load times. Full setup or revision of the Google Business Profile. Keyword research for your area, build or revision of topic-specific service pages with sufficient depth. Internal linking and clean URL structure. Documentation of all implemented actions.
What is not included: paid advertising (Google Ads), social-media buildout, brand development. Focus on organic visibility and technical foundations, not on everything at once. Further: The SEO scope in detail, Local SEO Munich (for district-level clustering for Munich-based trades) or Technical GDPR Audit (when GDPR deficits are part of the picture, as in the Rucker case). If you need the website itself first: website for tradespeople.
Trades we work with: electrical businesses, plumbing and heating companies, painters, interior designers, carpenters, roofers, window installers. The trade is secondary, the structure is decisive.
Suitable
- Trades businesses with a working structure that want to generate more qualified inquiries from Google regionally.
- Businesses that know their website has weaknesses but cannot pinpoint where.
- Businesses that lost visibility after an agency change and need recovery.
- Decision-makers seeking an honest assessment, not a sales presentation.
Not suitable
- Businesses expecting short-term results within a few weeks. For fast visibility: Google Ads, not our offering.
- Businesses without a clear target group or without a defined service offering. SEO amplifies, it does not replace positioning work.
- Businesses looking for an agency that „takes everything over" without a clear project scope.
Who led the recovery
Patrick Sosath, founder & strategist.
Trained IT specialist, Management & Technology degree at OTH Regensburg. Career stations: Cubefinity GmbH (Straubing) as a working student in software development and Step Ahead AG (Germering) in B2B mid-market environment. Dual background: technical architecture and commercial reality in one person.
The Rucker recovery was technology plus communication: redirect map, indexation check and GDPR remediation in parallel, ongoing alignment with the client in plain language instead of reporting theatre. Every phase of an engagement sits with one person, not distributed across a key-account layer.
That the first Rucker version was created privately as a personal favour is not a bug, but domain experience first-hand: what actually triggers inquiries at a Munich electrical business, what only sounds academic, which local search queries actually want to buy. This experience stands behind every recommendation on this page.
FAQ
Frequent questions.
It depends on the starting point. A website that is already technically clean and only needs content optimisation requires less work than a complete restructuring. The strategy call (60 minutes, 190 EUR) provides a prioritised assessment with concrete actions and a realistic effort estimate. Only after that does an offer follow.
Technical fixes and Google Business Profile optimisations show first effects within a few weeks. Content actions like new or revised service pages typically take three to six months to rank organically. Google indexation and organic ranking buildup take time, that is measurable reality.
Not necessarily. Many existing websites can be significantly improved with targeted structural adjustments without a complete rebuild. The strategy call clarifies whether optimisation or a new build is the more sensible path, based on your specific situation.
Google Ads delivers immediate visibility against per-click fees. When the campaign ends, the visibility ends. SEO builds organic visibility that exists independently of ongoing ad spend. Both channels can make sense, but they have different time horizons and cost structures. Seosath works exclusively in the organic area.
Yes, if the goal is local inquiries from Google. Local search queries on the smartphone are action-oriented: people who search usually want to commission soon. These inquiries go to the businesses that are visible, not automatically to those with the best reputation. The question is not whether SEO makes sense, but whether the concrete effort is in a sensible relation to the starting point. The strategy call clarifies that.
Multi-location trades need their own architecture: per location an own URL with locally adapted content, own schema and own Google Business Profile entry. We map this before every build, otherwise the location pages cannibalise each other in the SERPs and none reaches top positions. The location pages must not come from a template with variable replacement, they need real locally-relevant content. Otherwise Google evaluates them as doorway pages and removes them from the index.
It gets included in the analysis phase, because GDPR deficits can directly have SEO consequences (see the Rucker recovery case above). Typical findings: non-compliant cookie-consent configuration, third-party scripts without consent, missing or outdated legal texts, tracking without legal basis. We bring the stack GDPR-compliant before any further SEO action, otherwise the analytics data stays unusable and in the worst case there is risk of legal warnings.
Yes. Per physical location with its own address, an own Google Business Profile is required, that is official Google policy. Anyone running multiple locations under one GBP risks suspension or visibility loss. Service-area businesses without a fixed location (e.g. mobile emergency service) get a service-area profile with a defined catchment radius. We set that up, check NAP consistency across all relevant directories and define the maintenance rhythm, so the profiles do not wither again after three months.
